And very Dickensian; old Charlie boy’s “Bleak House” vibes… A Meaty 🍖 chunk of a book 📖 which I sometimes dreaded going back to 😂 😂 BUT absolutely loved 🥰 it when I did! Family drama 🎭 amplified over a will, contracts & lawsuits – the toxicity bleeds 🩸 out within the living realm after death ☠️ *Division* at the heart ❤️ of it all… 18th Century, Cornwall, Bath, London – murder, conspiracy, a circus 🎪 of lies & unexpected “reveals” – skilfully directed… by the “cards” 🃏 & the author ✍️ Red (our young female heroine 💪) has never known her Mother (a mystery to be solved) & she travels with her Gypsy father 👨 ❤️ & doll utilising an ancient method called The Square of Sevens, to tell fortunes 🔮 for people in order to survive. Sadly poor little Red loses her Dad 💨 early on in the story & her wee doll gets thrown into the fire 🔥 😢 BUT “rebirth” after loss is the key 🔑 & focus… amongst this twisted tale investigating the truth of Red’s past… Thankfully 🙏 her father (a cunning man) befriended a scholar/gentlemen whom he encouraged/persuaded to take his daughter in – just before he popped his clogs. With the exchange of an important document 📃 💥 but rather than give much away… trust me when I tell you to read it… especially if you like the classics. The trials & tribulations Red goes through are both v.traumatic & exciting 🎆 all at once. She’s spirited & firey 🔥 & determined. The perfect protagonist. An intricate plot with unexpected twists & turns. Characters are colourful, conflicted, troubled, flawed & magnificently human… I’d def recommend it. Quite genius. Actually.
