Irene Greenway 1929 – 2024 My truly legendary Nana has died and we said goodbye today. She was the most bright, unswervingly kind, positive and tolerant woman I’ve ever met. She was a maths genius. She was crafty, in both senses. She loved games and though she never quite use the same set of Rummikub rules twice it didn’t matter because watching her destroy everyone else at the table once she got on a roll was like something out of ‘A Beautiful Mind’. She believed that only boring people got bored. So her life was full of passions and interests. She loved puzzles, nature and adventure. She especially loved lace and everything about France. She had incredible persistence, for decades whenever anyone suggested a game of scrabble Nana would say “Ooo – could we play in French?” despite the fact that no-one had ever, even once, said yes. Although now, obviously, I wish I had done, at least once. She was interesting and for me even more impressively, she was endlessly interested in others. Her legacy is a whole raft full of just the most magical values and human qualities. She worked so hard. She valued the content so much more than the cover of a person. She saw the good in every single person, even if they were awful. She was a huge part of my upbringing, doing loads of my care when my parents worked. I remember more than once, as a child, breaking something in her house, and being so upset about it but her just being KIND – always just really flipping kind and never angry – a genuine empath with seemingly endless resources of understanding. Despite the fact she’d had all sorts of traumatic as well as brilliant things happen in her long and excellent life – she didn’t contain a single, solitary molecule of cruelty in her at all. What a wildly rare and incredible thing. And what a mark to leave on this world. I’m honoured to have loved and been loved by her. She will be so missed. ❤️
