Padma Lakshmi Instagram – It feels crazy that I flew to India for two days but it was worth it. I spoke at the #apblive #ideasofindia summit and I’m very grateful to have been invited. Growing up I never felt Indian enough when I went to be with family there and never American enough when I was in the US. It felt so good to be accepted just for who I am by that crowd of attendees. Several men came up to me and said they were going to show their daughters my talk. That made me feel really good. In the end I also couldn’t of course resist the pull of home and family. I went back to my granny’s old house, the place we all grew up in Chennai, or Madras as I still call it. The cool green marble tile was still there. The big styrax tree with crows cawing incessantly outside, the sad little white owl still crouching above my bedroom window at night. I ate dosas, thayir sadam, and vethakozumbu, relishing every bite with my oily fingers. So nourishing to be back in the bosom of my family, even just for a few hours. My aunt Banu digitized old tapes of us all singing carnatic songs including a 3 yr old me singing in Malayalam. Something I couldn’t do today. I may not have grown up knowing my real father but I was amply parented by all these lovely folks who made me feel wanted and cared for. What every child should have. I’m flying back now, but my heart is still there and in my ears the laughter of my uncles and aunts still echos.
