Richa Shukla Moorjani Instagram – I’ve never been more excited or proud to share anything than this – my wildly brilliant and unimaginably talented little sister @SheherazaadOfficial revealed her masterpiece of a debut album, “Qasr” (produced by the genius @aroojaftab ) today – available on Spotify/Apple. 🤲🏽🙏🏽 and it couldn’t have come at a more urgent time as an explicit call for the end of cultural erasure
I’ve watched her since she was about 5 years old shock every human around her with her prodigious artistry, while she continued to cultivate and refine her voice as a performer, artist and activist. She has stayed unapologetically true to herself and her unique ways of expression, despite everyone around her and the industry telling her to essentially cater to and be more accessible to a Eurocentric audience- something she has vehemently rejected in her fervent mission to reclaim our culture and homeland. In a time where we have basically been starved of *real* music with live orchestration combined with evocative lyrics that heal and inspire imagination, this genre-defying album is like an intoxicating tonic for the immigrant and diasporic soul. She will hate me for posting this and revealing that she’s my sister, but don’t care, I’m unashamedly her biggest fan 🖤
“The album, produced by @AroojAftab and released via @ErasedTapesRecords, takes the listener on a journey through delicate flamenco guitar lines coupled with smoky vocals; jaunty, mischievous cinematic stringscapes; followed by nostalgic palm tree surf-rock; and finishes with a tumultuous culmination of intricate, playful, and frequently surprising orchestrations.
‘A haunting commentary on displacement, immigration and imagined homelands’— Vogue India “
“This is about delighting in our wickedness, especially as gender expansive people, where we’ve previously had little control over our sonic narrative in Hindi and Urdu music.” – @sheherazaadofficial | Posted on 02/Mar/2024 03:52:11
