Sophie Morgan Instagram – Happy International Women’s Day. The theme this year is #InspireInclusion.

#DisabledWomen are so often overlooked, so I share this image of myself in my wheelchair as a way to a) represent and b) disrupt the narrative. I would encourage others to do the same.

So much needs to be done to improve the lives of Disabled women and girls around the world.

– Women are more likely than men to become disabled during their lives due in part to gender bias in the allocation of scarce resources and in access to services.
– Approximately 300 million women around the world have mental and physical disabilities.
– Disabled women and girls face the same spectrum of human rights abuses that non-disabled women face, but their social isolation and dependence magnifies these abuses and their consequences.
– Disabled women’s sexual and reproductive rights are grossly abused. They experience forced sterilisation forced abortion due to discriminatory attitudes about their parenting abilities, and denial of information about reproductive health and contraceptives.
– Disabled women also face limitations on their rights to marry and find a family and often lose custody of their children.
– The labor market does not adequately accommodate disabled women

Organisations and groups can #InspireInclusion through action in areas such as:

– consulting and hiring disabled women
– recruiting, retaining and developing diverse talent (work Keely and I are proud to be doing with @_making_space__)
– supporting women and girls in leadership, decision-making, business and STEM
– designing and building accessible infrastructure
– helping women and girls make informed decisions about their health
– involving women and girls in sustainable agriculture and food security
– providing women and girls with access to inclusive and accessible education and training
– elevating women and girl’s participation and achievement in adaptive sport
– addressing further areas supporting the advancement of women and girls by consulting with disabled women
– make emergency and relief efforts inclusive and accessible to all
