In our response lies our growth and freedom.” —Viktor Frankl If you wrote this quote as a formula, it might look like this: S( )R. This week, I’m celebrating 26 years of sobriety. Before I got sober, there was no space at all between the S and the R. Something happened, someone did or said something, and I’d come out swinging or fearing or worrying or apologizing. I responded in a way that led to more stacked stimuli and responses. There was very little growth and very little freedom. I’ve learned to pry open that space over the past 26 years. Breath, curiosity, better sleep, working out, intention, therapy, prayer—I’ve learned to practice what Buddhists call the sacred pause. But the past two years have taken a toll, and now it’s time for a serious recommitment to creating and maintaining space. For me, this includes a three-month sabbatical, a break in podcasting and social media, and making sure our team takes time away. You can read more on the website. In one of the best speeches I’ve ever heard, actress, screenwriter, director, and producer Michaela Coel said, “Do not be afraid to disappear, from it, from us, for a while and see what comes to you in the silence.” I’m a big fan of silence. I can’t wait! We set audacious goals in our organization—like “Start global conversations about shame and vulnerability”—but this might be our boldest move yet. We’ll be back this fall. Caption : I’m not talking about seeking solid opinions or advice. I’m talking about desperately polling people whose opinions are often not relevant. It’s a red flag that no one talks about, but it emerged as very common in the research. From “Should I get bangs?” to “Should I let my child do this thing that feels scary to me?” It’s like when you lose your keys and you start looking in the freezer. Time to take a deep breath and re-evaluate. Normally, we just need quiet and stillness so we can hear our own voice. That’s way harder than polling.

Caption : The dehumanization of women. The dehumanization of Asians. The dehumanization of sex workers. The dehumanization around class. The dehumanization of immigrants. Dehumanizing language is a radicalizing tool of white supremacy and white evangelical extremism (which are inextricably connected). Combine a long history of discrimination and bias with leaders who talk about the “Kung Flu” and “grabbing them by the pussy” and you can see the very short distance between our language, our thoughts, and our actions including everything from violence and diminishing that violence with “just having a bad day” to “Well, look what kind of work they did.” This is why shame, humiliation, and dehumanizing make the world a more dangerous place for all of us. We shouldn’t tolerate anyone being shamed, humiliated or dehumanized – even the people who bring out our rage. It’s easier than accountability, it’s a quick way to discharge our anger, and it can even get some “likes” and fist bumps. Caption : On this week’s episode of “Unlocking Us,” I dug in with my sisters, Ashley and Barrett, on Guidepost #1 from “The Gifts of Imperfection”: Cultivating Authenticity. Before I started doing my research, I always thought of people as being either authentic or inauthentic. Authenticity was simply a quality that you had or that you were lacking. I think that’s the way most of us use the term: “She’s a very authentic person.” But as I started immersing myself in the research, I realized that, like many desirable ways of being, authenticity is not something we have or don’t have. It’s a practice — a conscious choice of how we want to live. And there is no authenticity without boundaries. This is tough for those of us who were raised to believe that being liked and keeping people comfortable are more important than our own self-worth or self-respect. My mantra in those tough moments: “Choose discomfort over resentment.” I’d rather ten minutes of discomfort than the quiet, soul-sucking fury that comes with an uninspired, dishonest, “Sure. No problem . . . asshole.”

Caption : I rarely think about my sobriety in terms of years. For me, celebrating 25 years of sobriety is about reflecting back on “trying to do the next right thing” for the past 9,125 days or, more honestly, for the past 219,000 hours. It also means staying humble and grateful that, with the help of countless people, I’ve been able to get back up the same number of times I’ve fallen down. And I fall a lot. The biggest learnings from the past 25 years are twofold: 1. Own the stories and the hard shit, or the stories you’re trying to outrun and the pain you’re denying will own you. The truth will set you free. It will kick your ass first, but then it will set you free. 2. We don’t have to do the hard stuff alone. We weren’t meant to. We heal in connection. This is why it pisses me off when people shove my work into the self-help category. The gifts that have accompanied my daily and sometimes hourly decision to feel instead of numb have been too many to name, but the one that I rarely talk about is how my sobriety has affected my level of self-trust. I write a lot about trust as a marble jar. We build trust like we collect marbles – one small gesture at a time. It’s not a big, sweeping act or a single gesture in a stressful moment. Trust is a collection of small moments. We talk about trust between people and groups, but we often forget about self-trust. Self-trust is normally the first casualty of failure or mistakes. We stop trusting ourselves when we hurt, get hurt, feel shame, or question our worth. Here’s how we use the BRAVING tool to think about self-trust: B – Did I respect my own boundaries? Was I clear about what’s okay and what’s not okay? R – Was I reliable? Did I do what I said I was going to do? A – Did I hold myself accountable? V – Did I respect the vault and share appropriately? I – Did I act from my integrity? N- Did I ask for what I needed? Was I nonjudgmental about needing help? G – Was I generous toward myself? Today, I’m putting 25 marbles in my self-trust jar. One for every year of my messy, hard af, wonderful, wholehearted, imperfect, sober life. xo, BB

Sharing a huge learning from the book about what happens when we focus on what’s wrong: “Here’s what happens in distressed relationships, over and over: We all have needs. We all have valid desires. But we don’t say them. We drop hints. We suggest. We stay safely in the shadows. We hope our partners will ‘just know.’ “We tell ourselves a story about why they should be able to figure it out without us having to say it (‘It’s obvious! It’s just common sense!’), and we believe it. Then, when our partners fail to magically fulfill those needs, we feel resentful. We begin to believe that our partners don’t care, are thinking only about themselves, are too busy for us, or no longer value the relationship as they once did. “And so we criticize them. ‘You always.’ ‘You never.’ These red flag phrases alert us that a couple is in shaky territory: the negative perspective might be starting to set in. “They’re scanning for what’s wrong, and losing the capacity to notice what’s right. “And the end result is criticism, which is when we take aim at who someone fundamentally is, instead of distinguishing between the person and the action.” Join us for these podcasts on #UnlockingUs—they’re direct, honest, and actionable!

Caption : I’ve been working on new research and a new book for three years. Now it’s time to write it. DAMMIT. I don’t want to go right now. It can feel like the abyss. I’m a binge writer. Once I start, I fall completely in. The world stops. I often find myself missing my life and my people and the rhythm of everyday life. And, I love my life, my people, and the predictability of everyday life. Weird things happen. That word I spent an hour looking for at 8pm will come to me at 4am, so I jump out of bed and write until 7am. Then I sleep until 9am, and I’ve missed everyone at breakfast. I hear them watching baseball in the other room, but I’m on a roll coding data so I listen for the score behind the door. But this is who I am. I can’t write for two hours a day. I can research everyday, but it’s writing time. This is how I’ve done it for as long as I’ve been writing. I have to find the current and slip in. And get carried away. Far away. Once I’m down the hole, or in the current, or navigating the abyss (pick your metaphor), it’s wonderful. And I love it. And I know how lucky I am to get to do what I love. And, mercifully, I write fast. The upside to this style is that the research takes years but the writing takes a couple of months. It’s time to fall in, and this is the scariest part for me. But I’m going. Because I can’t wait to share this new work with y’all. I’m going to need some help with this book, so if y’all are ready and willing – I’ll be posting some questions for you on social. Take your mark. Get set. Go.

Caption : Like many of you, I’m feeling weary this week. Some days I feel on top of my anxiety and some days it crashes over me. Some days I jump out of bed and think, “I got this! It’s going to be OK.” Other days I just want to hide under the covers until the world gets easier and I have a pandemic end-date, a back to school plan that keeps students, teachers and staff safe, and a signed universal commitment to social justice. I finished reading The Gifts audio book this afternoon. It’s the first time I’ve read it aloud, and when I came across this amazing quote – reading it made me feel better. When I first discovered this quote, I thought about the not-so-pretty details from my pre-sober, pre-breakdown-spiritual-awakening life. I thought about all of the proving, perfecting, and pleasing. I never thought about how to apply this learning to the “here and now.” Today, this quote shook me by the shoulders in a different way. Not only is it impossible for me to go back and make the old details pretty, I can’t make the new details pretty today. Uncertainty and anxiety drive me to hyper-focus on the details, but all that does is ramp up my fear and exhaustion. I think I’m going to try to move forward – in the wobbliest of ways – and refocus on the beautiful whole: Love, rest, justice, walking, water, connection, self-care, sleep, and joy. After talking to Priya about the importance of purpose and structure when we gather people, I decided to make our small gathering tomorrow more purposeful. We’re going to connect in a new way, including doing a little collective crafting to remind my parents how much we love them. It will be trial and error – for sure. It might even be a disaster. But I’m taking Priya’s advice and, “setting a bold, sharp purpose for our time together.” Plus we have tamales and shrimp campechana – so we’ll survive. We’re seeing nursing homes and hospitals being evacuated, long lines for food, boil mandates are in effect (where there is water), no gasoline, and more cold weather ahead. Many of you have reached out to ask where you can give and donate to help Texans. Thank you. First, if you know folks here — check on them. Second, I’m supporting the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund during this crisis. They are working across the state with many different organizations to bring food, warmth, and shelter to people in need. The minimum donation is $5 — which makes a bigger difference than you think. Also, here’s the answer to the question I always ask: 92 cents from each dollar goes directly to aid. Link is in the profile. Special thanks to all of those folks who are showing up, working, and volunteering. Many of these essential workers are the same exhausted folks who are getting us through the pandemic.
