Bakari Sellers Instagram – I am grateful that I am alive to share my story and shed light on the importance of Black maternal health. As many of you know, I had a near death experience after giving birth to Sadie & Stokely. I lost 75% of my blood supply as I hemorrhaged several hours after giving birth. I was intubated and stayed in the ICU for 36 hours shortly after giving birth. You can read my full story www.EllenRuckerSellers.com

But by God’s grace, my three wonderful black female doctors, and my husband that I am here to tell my story. šŸ™šŸ¾

It is a stark reality that Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared to white women. This disparity is not due to genetics or other inherent factors, but rather a result of systemic racism and the lack of proper medical care and attention given to Black mothers. So many of the deaths are preventable!

I am forever dedicated to amplifying this message for Black mothers, so that no more lives are lost due to preventable complications.

I asked these three women, my doctors to pray over me before they did my surgery, they did. That late evening they truly saved my life. Forever grateful to my doctors:
Dr. Octavia Cannon
Dr. Mala Freeman
Dr. Sophia Paige

Let’s keep the spotlight on Black Maternal Health throughout the year… we can save lives together.

Please share your story in the comments.
