David Holmes Instagram – Once again, I was reminded that when it comes to large chain hotels, it would always be profit over people, and as long as the square footage is fit for purpose, the hotels can call the room accessible. I can tell you this the room that I used was in no way big enough for a wheelchair and a shower chair plus luggage to navigate around.
If I had to use a hoist to get in bed, this is another bulky piece of equipment that would definitely have been a struggle to use in the space. Hotels need to start to truly assess the needs of people across the whole range of disability and not just tick boxes because of government mandates under the disability discrimination act. What if my partner was in a wheelchair and the two of us wanted to stay in the same room together? We couldn’t, simply because there would not have been enough space to accommodate two chairs as well as a shower chair, a hoist and any luggage. This hotel was part of a large chain, a giant corporation that could do better to accommodate for people with disabilities. | Posted on 04/Apr/2024 17:46:58
