Dondré Whitfield Instagram – @michelleobama and I could teach a class. Too many of us, as parents, are out here trying to be our kids FRIENDS. I have told my kids whenever they get beside themselves, “I’m not your FRIEND! I’m your FATHER!” Now don’t get me wrong, I work hard at having a LOVING relationship with my daughter and my son. But just because it’s loving doesn’t mean we’re PEERS or FRIENDS. You can be a confidant and not have the dynamic of being a peer.
There is such a thing as firm but LOVING
accountability. You can be a friend to your daughter or son once they LEAVE your house!!!!! But as long as you are the ultimate accountability partner, and they live under your roof, being their “friend” is a dangerous approach. And the quicker we get away from concept of “friends” the better off society will be because we will be raising great CITIZENS.
