Fiann Smithwick Instagram – Changing the angle that light hits these ammonites causes the colours to change thanks to refraction caused by the thin stacked layers of the shell. This iridescence is rare in ammonites and is only found in fossils from a select few locations. This is a Caloceras johnstoni from the earliest Jurassic of the UK.
