My uncle Wylder flew 17 combat missions in the European theater before being shot down over France. His co-pilot was severely injured and Wylder’s right arm was nearly taken off by anti-aircraft fire. The plane was never going to make it across the English Channel to its British base – so Wylder instructed his crew to parachute from the disabled plane. With only the use of his left arm, Wylder landed the plane in a French farm field.
All the members of his crew survived the Second World War.
