I endeavor to come to terms with your passing as I reminisce about that slender man with restless eyes, poking his head into my truck amidst the vast expanse of Tibet. Curious eyes behind a brilliant and creative mind that radiated desperate passion, vitality, enthusiasm, and a thirst for adventure.
You were demanding, to the point of having me repeat a scene at 8,500 meters, yet generous in teaching: from you, I learned to load and unload magazines into a travel bag at over 7,000 meters. You offered opportunities, listened to ideas, yet could also be cruel, sometimes overly harsh with others.
Your soul harbored a place no one could approach, a corner of untouchable silence—that was your enchantment. You never paused, David; to pause would suspend your world, preferring the swift life to being ensnared by events.
I’ve gone to my drawer and opened the file; the images return, bringing forth emotions. Everyone remembers you as the creator of the IMAX documentary on Everest; I shall remember you for the Happy Hours in Lhasa while filming for seven years in Tibet, the bivouac in the Tetons, or clowning around eating spam at 7,200 meters.
