Cynthia Erivo is a name that upon googling, a list of accolades, praise and inescapable buzz floods the screen, so who better to begin the Glass’ 15th Anniversary Issue cover roll out? The British multi-hyphenate has taken her craft to unparalleled levels with the prestigious EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) within her reach. While the awards are a testament to the scale of her ability, for Erivo, the journey to this point hasn’t always felt like an ascent to stardom.
Graduating from RADA, Erivo’s trajectory shifted when she took on the role of Sister Mary Clarence in Sister Act. “It felt like this is my job, this is what I’m doing” she pinpoints, acknowledging the importance of the inevitable push into the spotlight. “And then obviously The Colour Purple came around and everything sort of changed”.
Since her Tony-winning performance on Broadway, Erivo has continued to shapeshift on-screen, finding herself front and centre of the Academy-nominated Harriet, Luther: The Fallen Sun, and Disney’s Pinocchio. Now, her new project, DRIFT marks another impressive juncture, garnering the title of producer and lead, and consequently underlining her unstoppable duality.
Helping bring the film DRIFT, which tells the story of refugees and the horrors that they have fled from, to life through her production company, Edith’s Daughter, Erivo invested time to infuse the narrative with an insightful lens. “We are black women and if the subject matter is a black woman, it is probably a good idea to have someone behind the camera who understands that experience,” she says. “We could make sure that this would speak to the experience and make sure that things are as accurate as possible”.
Starring as Elphaba in the highly-anticipated Wicked franchise later this year, there are few heights Erivo is unable to reach – and we have no doubt that her EGOT is just on the horizon.
