Frankie Kennedy Instagram – Dolphins and whales are now officially recognized as “legal persons” in part of the world!
That’s thanks to a new treaty formed by Pacific Indigenous leaders from French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, New Zealand, and Tonga.
The treaty is intended to help protect cetaceans, which are at risk from whaling, boat strikes, seabed mining and many other human activities.
Their new status COULD lead to more protective measures in the region, like adjusting shipping routes and mandating lower boat speeds.
Of course, REAL protection would require Pacific nations to implement and enforce penalties. And it’s not yet clear if that’s going to happen.
But the treaty is definitely a step in the right direction, because if you’ve ever seen “Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home”, you know how important it is to save the whales!
