In photographing the remains of the hospital, reporters and residents have found messages from doctors, staff, and patients alike, as well as Palestinians who lost their homes and were sheltering within the hospital’s walls.
The pain and despair contained in many of the messages is without parallel or adequate translation to English. Doctors saying goodbye to their spouses, patients wishing only to see their mother or sibling again, staff writing reassurance to others in the hospital that it would all be over soon, whether through victory or martyrdom.
