FOOD ART MONTHLY CHALLENGE: Candy/Chocolate from Your Country (Rules Below)
I’ve been wanting to paint realistic food from a variety of movies by the Japanese animation studio “Studio Ghibli.” These are the Sakuma Drops candy from the film “Grave of the Fireflies,” which follows two orphans in Japan after WWII. It is absolutely the saddest movie I’ve ever watched, but it’s such an important film that I think everyone should watch it at least once. The interaction between the characters and these candies always stuck in my head, and when I rewatched it, I realized that these candies play a very symbolic role across the whole film. I first watched the movie in high school, but I watched it again last night before posting it… and needed so many tissues.
Originally made in 1908, Sakuma drops are only sold in bags now, but they used to be sold in cans. Ghibli released the can design from the film, and I managed to buy it in an online auction for this artwork. Hopefully I can create more Ghibli-themed artwork this year!
結構前から、ジブリ映画の食べ物をリアルタッチで描きたくて、こちらが1枚目になります。「火垂るの墓」で登場するサクマドロップスです。人生でみた映画の中で最も悲しい映画でしたが、みんな一度見るべきだと思います。高校生の時に初めて観たのですが、ドロップスのシーンがとても印象に残って、改めて観た時、ドロップはシンボルとして何回も出てきて意味深いですね。投稿する前にもう一度映画を観ることにしましたが、やっぱり合泣きでしたね。
1908年に販売が始まったサクマドロップスは今缶入りの販売が終わっているようですが、メルカリで映画の時に出したドロップス缶を見つけて、この絵のために購入しました。今年、他のジブリの作品を作れるように！
