If I made a mistake or came up short for the concept I had in mind for what made me good enough/worthy of connection/lovable, any pain I endured I thought I deserved. It’s what I “needed” or “what I got” for not living up to the expectations I had for myself or others had for me.
I know we all want our children to truly learn, to really develop a moral compass in alignment with our values… and the irony is that when we use shame to attempt to accomplish that, we often de-rail the real learning and rupture their self-esteem instead. Causing them to resent us, and disregard the very lesson we’re trying to explain.
