I was in Ethiopia a year ago when we recorded this appeal to support thousands fleeing conflict in Sudan and arriving in neighboring countries like Ethiopia.
A year on, the fighting continues, families continue to flee and the suffering for millions worsens. The Sudan emergency remains the fastest-growing displacement crisis today.
Over 8.5 million people have already been displaced – 1.7 million of whom have fled to neighboring countries, already hosting large refugee populations with resources overstretched.
I remember the fathers, mothers, and children I met a year ago who spoke of their harrowing journeys to safety. The teams at UNHCR are doing everything they can to provide urgent humanitarian support but more is needed so that refugees can live in safety with access to life-saving assistance, like clean water, food, shelter, healthcare, and mental health support.
