It was demoralizing to see her options narrow; to experience firsthand Hollywood’s gender-specific ageism. Instead of surrendering to sad motherhood, however, Dunst hard-pivoted to what she calls “elevated action.” This April, she’ll star in ‘Civil War,’ a provocative new dystopian film directed by Alex Garland. “I think it’s a cautionary tale…a fable of what happens when people stop seeing each other as human beings,” Dunst says of the @a24 film, which lands in a hotly divided election year. ‘Civil War’ might be her latest genre-hopping move, but she envisions her career stretching much, much further.
