The dogs have welcomed her to the family in such beautiful ways, and as I had expected. Chester has barely noticed, and when he is with her he’s very much ‘oh yeah, I already knew’. Cashew is cautious with change and so he is exercising his choices and getting to know her at a comfortable pace. And Harry has adopted the protective nature desiring to sit at her side as often as he can.
Choice and boundaries are the two key factors for the dogs. Ensuring the routine is predictable and that there are consistencies where the dogs go and when. Within this there are choices the dogs are able to make that keep them feeling safe, respected and calm.
