25 years ago today, the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released to the world. Despite early skepticism about how well it would do after the Fugees’ groundbreaking ‘The Score’, it did VERY well! Enormously well. Perhaps even more importantly, the album served as part of the soundtrack of 90’s music that would help encourage and guide a generation.
I grew up loving music, particularly the music that was commonly referred to as ‘oldies’ or ‘golden oldies’, ‘classics’. This constituted the Doo Wop, Gospel-inspired Soul music, and rock classics that my parents grew up on. To me, these records were new despite being vintage. They were topical, melodically sophisticated and romantic. They incited joy and tenderness but often introspection and inspiration to action.
In 1998 it was my turn to make a record, and I wanted to join as many aspects of my musical upbringing and perspective as possible for that time. I had the support and aid of several brilliant and talented people, who if they didn’t play an instrument or sing, were brilliant in supporting, encouraging, and moving with the urgency necessary to help a movement take root, and an album become a classic. I am forever grateful for all of them.
