MC Sha-Rock Instagram – Authentic Hip Hop Flyer: January 18, 1980 44 years ago today, this happened. A jam was given in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.. The Culture of Hip Hop celebrated Dr. King before it became a federal holiday.
The jam was held at the T-Connection, located between Gun Hill/White Plains Road in the Bronx.
This flyer/jam was a 2 day event, orchestrated by Jazzy D, who was one of Hip Hop’s first promoters that dominated the Hip Hop venue scene, while serving as manager for the Funky 4 & The Funky 4 1 More.
This flyer was illustrated by Buddy Esquire, who was coined as the “King Of The Flyers” in New York City
In the early years of Hip Hop Culture, and before Hip Hop was coined as such, The T-Connection was the Madison Square Garden of Hip Hop. It was the perfect staging venue for DJ’s and MC’s. My crew was able to book our own parties and perform at this venue on so many occasions, due to the relationship that we had with the owner (Richie T). Not to mentioned, he knew that we could single handily pack the venue with no other groups on the flyers. Partygoers would come from every borough in NYC. This was our home!
RIP to Richie T for providing such a wonderful place and experience for all of the young teenagers, who lived and breathe for the culture
