Oon Shu An Instagram – How much money has been spent demonising, ridiculing and dehumanising faces like Khaled Nabhan and Saginaw Grant?
I saw this comment by a @casper.l.v on a post the other day and it hit me so hard:
“My grandma was a kid when the Nazis took over Germany. She warned me about what to look out for: complacency, censorship, and propaganda. Always pay attention to who is telling you what to feel ask yourself if you’d still feel that way w/o their justification for it.”
Who is telling you 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭? This is NOT the same as telling you 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, in a fair and unbiased way and you having feelings about that then coming to your own conclusions.
I think… on a more everyday scale, when we find it easy to dismiss a point of view without thought, when we find ourselves scoffing at the easy, obvious things-like they way a people look, sound, their mannerisms, their culture, when we find it easy to use an outside identity as a reason anyone from a group is “like that” in a not good way, all this without pushback, without question and without evidence except what we’ve been told to feel about it, in the stories we are told, the stories in our heads, the stories we ourselves tell, and in life, a level of dehumanisation has probably taken place.
And what is happening now is a direct impact of these things. In no world where a People seen as human beings would this level of abject cruelty and horror be allowed to be inflicted on them for as long as it has, as illegally as it as with people still sitting around just casually and callously discussing semantics. In no world would this happen to a People seen as human beings.
Robert Fisk was referring to journalists when he said this, that they must be “Neutral and unbiased, on the side of those who suffer.” We must learn to understand this, too.
