Confined — say what? My wheelchair, isn’t ideal to get around in this world AND it is my way. We have established a laws (ABA, ADA, Section 504…..) to provide people with disabilities equal opportunity in this world. We still suck as a society, ignorant or adverse to stepping out of our inherent biases and stigmas. The wheelchair isn’t confining, the perception of us and the lack of effort to meet laws IS what is confining.
Handicap—engrained in our vocabulary, I know—-it translates over often as “we are handicap.” Nope. Let’s try Accessible instead. That blue icon with the human in a wheelchair is the International Symbol of Access. ACCESS.
Severed Spinal Cord – When someone suffers from trauma to the spinal cord, it is RARELY fully severed. The medical term (see science posts) is “complete” or “ASIA A.” Misnomer to use “severed.” It perpetuates the narrative that 1.) recovering function or sensation will never happen 2.) translating to our lack of effort, care to fund SCI science. 3.) securing the narrative of hopelessness 4.) in turn, it is foolish to educate and advocate for ourselves. Vicious cycle.
Spinal Cord Injury cures — Yup, sure would be nice to be the human I was on October 17, 2017 12pm vs 1pm. Science isn’t there yet. YET!!! Why can’t we try? Some are making hard gains with the smaller goal of ANY return of function or sensation. Hands that lay silent and can’t grasp vs hands that can grasp #tendontransfer can greatly increase the quality of life for that individual. Bladder, spasticity, blood pressure, autonomic dysreflexia, bowel, orgasms, breathing, nerve pain, skin sensation of being cold, hot, pressure…… #itsnotallaboutwalking
