How To Begin Again… And Again… According to Artists by All Arts Staff

The artistic path contains many points of transition. Sometimes these moments are subtle, like shifting weight between feet. Others can be so obvious that they cleave a rupture between the before and after. No matter how big the switch, change can bring clarity, new purpose, surprising turns and deeper understanding — and maybe even some anxiety, if we’re being honest.
We asked eight artists from various disciplines how they’ve navigated transitions and shifts throughout their careers. Below, you’ll find artists who have moved across industries, modes and even the country.

“At 45, I’m going back to school to pursue my M.F.A. Why start over when I already have two decades behind me as a working artist? Why go backwards? Because … of the glorious opportunity to begin again, this time with significantly more awareness of how precious the opportunity is. By necessity, working artists must pitch ourselves for funding and residency applications that sustain our practices. Even when we secretly hate what we are making in the studio, it is still a necessity to chirp away excitedly on social media. I don’t feel that I have all the answers or that I am satisfied with everything I make. I am elated that I get to be in the role of a student again, not expected to know, allowed to flounder and f*** up. The grace of this is stunning to me. Even more so as a mother, who lives with the unspoken social demand that I justify every action with utility for my family — it feels even more miraculous to enter this period of sustained exploration.”
