Sophia Wallace Instagram – These sculptures are forever connected with postpartum and the pandemic for me. I gave birth a week before the NYC lockdown. Struggling with PTSD from my birth and PPD, I had some very intimate encounters with despair. And yet life is full of surprises. In this time, I was notified that I was a recipient of a fellowship that I hadn’t even known I was in the running for. It was a 10k grant with no strings attached from @lovecrave Foundation that recognized the work I had already done! This unexpected resource allowed me to begin a new body of work, that became 🦢 series. Continuing to create in my studio helped me stay tethered to sense of self (which motherhood in America seemed determined to obliterate). And that is not all the good that came to me. Through the kindness of an artist friend (@katefauvell thank you) I was filmed for a TV program about artists during the pandemic. Working closely with the incredible filmmakers @lizziesarge @cyprianfilms and show host @safayaks renewed my sense of connection to my community. This was life affirming after months of isolation not only due to covid but also the requirements of postpartum. I can’t understate how much these blessings and friendships sustained me in this time.
