Caption : I learned about the sudden passing of Tatjana Patitz when I landed at an airport on the same coast earlier today. Ever since, all I can see is her face, hear her voice, and of course am flooded with memories. Tatjana embodied, to me, European sophistication and style when I met her. Of the many shoots and memories we shared since we first met in 1985, the first one was most present today. It was was on my second shoot for American Vogue that we were first paired, along with @estellelefebure_orahe and #LetitiaFerminDidot, in Cannes with photographer #dennispeel and editor #pollymellen to shoot that season’s collections. I was a 16 year old high school student from Northern California who was permitted to leave school to travel alone to Paris for the first time for this special opportunity. I would stay at the Hotel Crillon for a night before meeting up with the rest of the team on location the following day. Tatjana was already living in Paris at the time and had been given the assignment, or chore, of collecting me on the way to the airport. My first introduction to Tatjana was over the hotel lobby phone. “Where are you? We are going to be late!” She said. I was sad to leave my beautiful room after such a short stay but definitely did not want to get on the bad side of anyone. Not on this trip, and especially not Tatjana Patitz. It wasn’t until we got to Charles de Gaulle that she started to relax and speak to me. By the time we got to our hotel in Cannes, she invited me to her hotel room, where we drank mini bar champagne, ate Toblerone chocolates and smoked cigarettes while she talked to her French boyfriend over the phone. Tatjana was always a vision. Glamorous, sophisticated, and warm, once she let you in. I could have watched her smoke cigarettes and speak in any of the many languages she was fluent in all day. Who needed to work? I was learning how an international woman behaved and moved in the world in real time. Tatjana took me in, under her wing. I stayed in her apartment for a night in Paris on my way home on the floor of her cool pied de terre on the left bank. You are unforgettable and are forever in my heart. 💙

We had recently bonded over a few things things in common. Our dads both worked for #PanAm, we had recently broken up with older boyfriends we had outgrown, and we were both Capricorns. And then there was @calvinklein We also loved to travel, especially to remote places in the world off the beaten track so this opportunity to work together with @arthurelgort was a dream come true. I have so many funny memories and stories and photos taken on my own camera to help recall the details. Also, our 10th anniversary participating in it was already a dream for me. Then, I finished very close to my goal at 4:01:20, thanks to my teammate and friend @emzim1. @teamrunemc raised over $400,000 to ensure equitable access to safe and respectful maternity care for all. But the true highlight was starting the race with my daughter @graciebrns and hugging her after she crossed the finish line of her first marathon at 18! Beyond proud of us all, Team. Thank you to everyone who supported us in every way you did. This one will be tough to beat!

Caption : What more can I say that hasn’t already been said since the deeply sad news of Stella Tennant’s passing earlier today? Carolyn Murphy recently posted this 50th anniversary of Italian Vogue cover which prompted many memories of past shoots and interactions with all of these amazing women throughout the years. I remember meeting Stella in London in the early 90’s. We were dressing next to eachother backstage at a show. She was so beautiful and gentle, naked except for her nose piercing and big black boots. I remember her easy laugh and humble strength. Later, after Stella had become a mother she would beam talking about the kids and the farm and her other “quiet” life. Stella evolved in front of all of our eyes in the most beautiful, relaxed and confident way. I never imagined there was anything she couldn’t do. You are deeply admired, respected and will be missed by everyone you touched in this lifetime. Sending love to you all. ❤️

This photo and story in the magazine promoting my book, “Living Yoga:Creating a life Practice,” (Hyperion 2002) was a true turning point for me. After graduating from @nyugallatin and in the midst of starting two businesses, Sundari and Nuala, fulfilling this goal was quite a feat. Caption : Like so many other women of my age and generation, I grew up with Sinead O’Connor’s voice in my head. More than stirring thoughts in my head, her voice reverberated in my soul on a deeper level than any other music or voice at the time. I couldn’t understand then, that it was the pain and isolation in her sometimes wailing singing style that I was responding to. What was crystal clear was that she was always precise and deliberate with her voice and the way she used it, right up until the end. Sometimes stunning, sometimes shrill, it stung. To not feel when listening to her, is impossible to fathom. I never had the opportunity to meet Sinead or to see her perform live but we did connect briefly once. I was fortunate enough to reach out to her through her first husband John Reynolds who I met through mutual friends. I was working on a compilation of music by female artists who were also mothers to benefit @everymomcounts. The song I was hoping she would consider contributing was “This Is to Mother You,” but each artist who joined on to the project had their own ideas about which song was ultimately recorded. Instead, Sinead chose “Petite Poulet.” 🙏 Please give them both a listen if you get the chance. The yearning of both Mother and Child is a theme throughout her immense body of work. I finally watched the documentary “Nothing Compares to You,” directed by @kathrynferguson a month ago on a plane and was reminded of everything she gave me and how much her life and story represents the plight of women in the purest form. Rest easy, Mother with your Baby forever.
