You have to embrace it. Caption : DAVID AND IMAN’S 25-YEAR-OLD BIRTHDAY FUN “On his 52nd birthday…” * On what would have been David’s 77th birthday, we look back 25 years to January 8th, 1999, to a snowy New York evening, when David and Iman took part in an online chat for BowieNet members in honour of David’s 52nd birthday. Known to BowieNetters in the chatroom as Sailor, David would often drop in unannounced for random chats with whoever was around. But this was scheduled and was rammed with everyone descending on the chatroom at once. In those days of dial-up, it could make for a frustrating experience trying to keep up with the flow. Iman kicked off proceedings and David joined in a bit later. We already knew how funny David was, but it was great to witness Iman’s wicked sense of humour too. Caption : BOWIE’S BUSTER KEATON TRIBUTES “He’s Chameleon, Comedian, Corinthian and Caricature…” The first image here is another fine Steve Schapiro portrait from 1975. As you can see, David is pictured with Rudi Blesh‘s biography of Buster Keaton. Schapiro remembers how David was impressed with the photographer’s connection to Keaton: “From the moment Bowie arrived, we seemed to hit it off. Incredibly intelligent, calm, and filled with ideas, he talked a lot about Alistair Crowley whose esoteric writings he was heavily into at the time. When David heard that I had photographed Buster Keaton, one of his greatest heroes, we instantly became friends.” Bowie even used a full-page 1964 Schapiro shot of Keaton in New York inside the 1976 Isolar Tour programme. The deliberation was voted at the council of Paris on February 3, 2020. This “Rue David Bowie”, the first section of which will be inaugurated on January 8, 2024, will be located on a road still under construction in the area Paris Rive Gauche. It already hosts Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat places and will start at 61 avenue Pierre-Mendès-France (where the unveiling will take place) and end at boulevard de l’Hôpital. David Bowie did not have a special link with the 13th district but did have one with Paris. Caption : Please forgive the graininess of our latest Bowie Reflection. It’s an enlargement of TJ Newton (Bowie) on the set of The Man Who Fell To Earth, taken by David James. Here’s the caption from the reverse of the uncropped photo: “Mary-Lou (CANDY CLARK) tries to break down formal barriers between herself and Thomas Jerome Newton (DAVID BOWIE) when she invites him into her bathroom.” The second image is of Bowie’s original artwork (see signature bottom right), a collage he created utilising two other stills from the same scene. If you’re unfamiliar with this piece, it first appeared as a full-page in the 1976 ISOLAR tour programme and it was also an exhibit at the David Bowie Is V&A exhibition. (See last image) Look closely at Bowie’s reflection and the bubbles in the bath. A bit of pre-Photoshop scalpel work by Bowie. Thankfully, his replacement of the bubbles with Linoleum keeps us on the right side of social platform censors. The original image of Mary Lou was a little more revealing. #BowieReflections

Titled Beat Godfather Meets Glitter MainMan the interview took place on 17th November 1973 in Bowie’s London home, with pictures taken by Terry O’Neill.
