They were made for the American Library Association‘s READ campaign, and specifically for the 1987 David Bowie for America’s Libraries READ poster, and associated items such as bookmarks. * David suggested the title for the Iggy Pop album of the same name. He also took the cover shot of Iggy based on Erich Heckel’s painting Roquairol. The photograph is often miscredited to Andrew Kent. Caption : BRETT MORGEN ACCEPTS GRAMMY FOR BEST MUSIC FILM “Freak out in a Moonage Daydream…” Brett Morgen’s David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream has won this year’s Grammy Award for Best Music Film, and Brett Morgen was there to accept it in person. “When I first started this project, I met with David Bowie’s executors,” Brett said during his speech. “Bill [Zysblat] said to me, ‘David is not here to authorize this film, so it cannot be Bowie on Bowie. You have to embrace it. It’s going to be Morgen on Bowie.’ And there are not a lot of people in this day and age who would hand over all of these archives and let me make an art project.” After thanking the executives as well as his wife and kids, Brett closed by thanking “David Bowie, the single greatest artist who’s walked the face of this earth.” Watch his acceptance speech here: https://youtu.be/gaWY2z_u44k?si=Hp_893nqQh68pLL3 (Linktree in bio) Moonage Daydream was up against stiff competition in the shape of the other nominees in the Best Music Film category, including How I’m Feeling Now (Lewis Capaldi), Live From Paris, The Big Steppers Tour (Kendrick Lamar), I Am Everything (Little Richard), and Dear Mama (Tupac Shakur). Caption : DAVID AND IMAN’S 25-YEAR-OLD BIRTHDAY FUN “On his 52nd birthday…” * On what would have been David’s 77th birthday, we look back 25 years to January 8th, 1999, to a snowy New York evening, when David and Iman took part in an online chat for BowieNet members in honour of David’s 52nd birthday. Known to BowieNetters in the chatroom as Sailor, David would often drop in unannounced for random chats with whoever was around. But this was scheduled and was rammed with everyone descending on the chatroom at once. In those days of dial-up, it could make for a frustrating experience trying to keep up with the flow. Iman kicked off proceedings and David joined in a bit later. We already knew how funny David was, but it was great to witness Iman’s wicked sense of humour too. Here’s an example of that… + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + LaughingGnome: Hi Iman and welcome to the wackiness! I was wandering how much you knew of David Bowie before you met him? Were you a fan? Iman: Yes, I’ve always been a fan of David’s music and actually been to all his concerts since I arrived in America in 1976, but I have never went backstage. I have been invited to go backstage, but we all know why girls like me are invited backstage! So I never went. + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + Thankfully, Paul Kinder over at BowieWonderworld had the foresight to save all the BowieNet Live chats, so you can read the full transcript with many contributions from David here: https://www.bowiewonderworld.com/chats/dbchatiman0199.htm (Linktree in bio) Congratulations are also due today as BowieWonderworld celebrates its 27th birthday. BWW is the longest running Bowie fansite of them all and is possibly the most valuable Bowie resource out there. Well done Paul. 📸 Kevin Mazur – David Bowie and Iman at the MTV Video Music Awards at Metropolitan Opera House New York City, 9th September 1999. * The original lyric from Uncle Arthur was “On his 32nd birthday…” #BowieForever #WorldDavidBowieDay #BowieNet

Caption : BOWIE COLLECTS EDISON AWARD 50 YEARS AGO TODAY “It’s made out of old fisherman…” On this day in 1974 (13th February), David Bowie attended a press reception at the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam, where Ad Visser (host of Dutch music show Top Pop), presented him with the Edison Award and a certificate for the Most Popular Male Vocalist, with particular recognition given to Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. Recalling an earlier trip to London to visit David, Visser poured two glasses of an “old fisherman drink”, Schelvispekel*, to toast David’s win. David made the most of his visit to the Netherlands, including further work on the forthcoming Diamond Dogs album, several photo sessions with the new look and a recording of Rebel Rebel for Top Pop, which was broadcast a few weeks later. Watch a recently remastered version here on the TopPop YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8BzPxWvdAs (Linktree in bio) Here’s David speaking about that new ‘pirate’ look in 1993: “I I had conjunctivitis, so I made the most of it and dressed like a pirate. Stopped just short of the parrot. I had this most incredible jacket that I was wearing that night, it was a bottle-green bolero jacket that Freddie made for me, and he got an artist to paint, using the appliqué technique, this supergirl from a Russian comic on the back. But I took the jacket off during the press conference and somebody stole it.” The light-fingered journalist who lifted the jacket is well known and has made no attempt to hide their identity, in fact, quite the opposite. So, no need to give them more publicity here. #BowieRebelRebel50 #BowieNetherlands #BowieTopPop (Continued in comments)

Caption : BOWIE’S BUSTER KEATON TRIBUTES “He’s Chameleon, Comedian, Corinthian and Caricature…” The first image here is another fine Steve Schapiro portrait from 1975. As you can see, David is pictured with Rudi Blesh‘s biography of Buster Keaton. Schapiro remembers how David was impressed with the photographer’s connection to Keaton: “From the moment Bowie arrived, we seemed to hit it off. Incredibly intelligent, calm, and filled with ideas, he talked a lot about Alistair Crowley whose esoteric writings he was heavily into at the time. When David heard that I had photographed Buster Keaton, one of his greatest heroes, we instantly became friends.” Bowie even used a full-page 1964 Schapiro shot of Keaton in New York inside the 1976 Isolar Tour programme. (2nd image) Bowie references Keaton in at least a couple of his videos. In the 1977 Stanley Dorfman-directed Be My Wife promo, he performs against a bleached-out background in this heartfelt plea for marital union and somehow manages to appear nonchalant and anguished at the same time. Apparently, Bowie’s make-up and mannerisms in the video were a nod to Buster himself. (3rd image) The Keaton look was reprised more obviously and to wonderful effect throughout the Miracle Goodnight video in 1993. (4th image) A couple more images may or may not have been as a result of David watching Keaton’s movies. Perhaps the links are a little tenuous, but here they are anyway. The 5th image is Sukita’s famous shot from 1973 wherein Bowie mirrors Keaton’s pose in the film The High Sign. (6th image) The 7th slide is the 1971 edition of the KEATON paperback that Bowie is holding in the first image and the still of Keaton as a sailor is from the film The Navigator. Finally, the last picture by @blamsnap is from the 2000 BowieNet Roseland concert when Bowie dressed nautically, Sailor being his chatroom nickname. KEATON is a book that David was clearly fond of, but it’s another that didn’t make it into BOWIE’S TOP 100 BOOKS – THE COMPLETE LIST: https://www.davidbowie.com/blog/2013/10/1/bowies-top-100-books-the-complete-list (Linktree in bio) #BowieBookLover #BowieSchapiro #BowieKeaton

Caption : LULU’S MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD IS FIFTY TODAY “He said I was his friend…” Fifty years ago today on Friday 11th January 1974, a 25-year-old Lulu launched the first of a few career resurrections in the shape of the Bowie-penned 45, The Man Who Sold The World/Watch That Man. Produced and arranged by David Bowie and Mick Ronson the track reached #3 on the official UK singles chart, Lulu’s first top ten hit for five years. It’s a superb record with a cracking arrangement quite different to the original Bowie track first recorded for the album of the same name in 1970. Bowie provided backing vocals and a wonderful sax hook, while Ronno plays a solid riff throughout, all new to Lulu’s version which was recorded in France during the Pin Ups sessions. The unlikely coupling created lots of press around the release, the Daily Mirror article in our montage being just one such item. Apparently, David was more than a bit partial to the Lulu version himself, this from the Moonage Daydream book: “Lulu is such a bright, funny and talented little thing. When I first heard her version of ‘Shout’ I was initially gobsmacked that anybody British had the nerve to cover that Isley Brothers classic. Then I realised that she had actually done a great job with it. How the idea came up for having her do a version of ‘Man Who Sold The World’ I have no clue, but I’m so glad we did it. I used the Pin Ups line-up to back her, including Ronson and drummer Aynsley Dunbar, and played the sax section on overdubs. I still have a very soft spot for that version, though to have the same song covered by both Lulu and Nirvana still bemuses me to this day.” Lulu went on to record a couple more songs with David that ended up on his own Young Americans album after he decided to keep them for himself…but that’s another story. Caption : GEORGE AND GEOFF TO UNVEIL RUE DAVID BOWIE PLAQUE “Look for the shafts of light on the road…” It is a privilege and an honour for the David Bowie Estate to have been asked by the town hall of the 13th district of Paris to support the organisation of the inauguration day of Rue David Bowie in Paris on Monday, 8th January 2024. Here’s what the spokesperson for the district had to say: + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + “Four years after the death of the English rock star, David Bowie, the mayor of the 13th district of Paris, Jérôme Gourmet, decided to submit the idea to his council to give the name of David Bowie to one of the new streets located in the future Austerlitz district. The deliberation was voted at the council of Paris on February 3, 2020. This “Rue David Bowie”, the first section of which will be inaugurated on January 8, 2024, will be located on a road still under construction in the area Paris Rive Gauche. It already hosts Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat places and will start at 61 avenue Pierre-Mendès-France (where the unveiling will take place) and end at boulevard de l’Hôpital. David Bowie did not have a special link with the 13th district but did have one with Paris. For the mayor of the 13th – a fan of contemporary art also a fan of David Bowie – who is keen to give a strong cultural image to his district, this project makes sense.” + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + Jérôme Soligny, who was involved with the organisation of the event, had this to say: “To unveil the plaque, I suggested calling on David’s lifelong friends, George Underwood and Geoff MacCormack, who both accepted enthusiastically. Today George is a painter and Geoff a photographer, but they are well known to fans of Bowie for accompanying him at various stages of his career. An acoustic concert will also take place at the end of the day at the town hall of the 13th district on the walls of which, on this occasion, paintings by George and photos by Geoff will be hung.” Stay tuned for updates regarding the unveiling and concert. #RueDavidBowie #BowieParis

An acoustic concert will also take place at the end of the day at the town hall of the 13th district on the walls of which, on this occasion, paintings by George and photos by Geoff will be hung.” Stay tuned for updates regarding the unveiling and concert. #RueDavidBowie #BowieParis

Caption : Please forgive the graininess of our latest Bowie Reflection. It’s an enlargement of TJ Newton (Bowie) on the set of The Man Who Fell To Earth, taken by David James. Here’s the caption from the reverse of the uncropped photo: “Mary-Lou (CANDY CLARK) tries to break down formal barriers between herself and Thomas Jerome Newton (DAVID BOWIE) when she invites him into her bathroom.” The second image is of Bowie’s original artwork (see signature bottom right), a collage he created utilising two other stills from the same scene. If you’re unfamiliar with this piece, it first appeared as a full-page in the 1976 ISOLAR tour programme and it was also an exhibit at the David Bowie Is V&A exhibition. (See last image) Look closely at Bowie’s reflection and the bubbles in the bath. A bit of pre-Photoshop scalpel work by Bowie. Thankfully, his replacement of the bubbles with Linoleum keeps us on the right side of social platform censors. The original image of Mary Lou was a little more revealing. #BowieReflections

Caption : BOWIE AND BURROUGHS IN ROLLING STONE 50 YEARS AGO TODAY “If you want it, boys, Get it here thing…” Fifty years ago today on 28th February 1974, Rolling Stone published a double interview with William Burroughs and David Bowie overseen by Craig Copetas. Titled Beat Godfather Meets Glitter MainMan the interview took place on 17th November 1973 in Bowie’s London home, with pictures taken by Terry O’Neill. It’s a fascinating read, and a great snapshot of the time, You can read the full thing here over on the brilliant Bowie resource, Bowie Golden Years: https://www.bowiegoldenyears.com/press/74-02-28-rolling-stone.html (Linktree in bio) Before you go though, it may be worth bearing this snippet in mind from the interview… + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + Bowie: I change my mind a lot. I usually don’t agree with what I say very much. I’m an awful liar. Burroughs: I am too. Bowie: I’m not sure whether it’s me changing my mind, or whether I lie a lot. It’s somewhere between the two. I don’t exactly lie, I change my mind all the time. People are always throwing things at me that I’ve said and I say that I didn’t mean anything. You can’t stand still on one point your entire life. + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + Aside from Terry’s images, the colour shot is of the hand-coloured Wild Boys badge Bowie made.
