Ian McKellen Instagram - In my first ever job, at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry, the company did a different play every fortnight. One of these was Agatha Christie’s “Black Coffee” in which I played the rather sinister, ancient butler, Tredwell. This involved powdering my youthful hair white and painting a few wrinkles on my face with a doddery gait, taking care not to spoil the poisoned coffee which kills my employer. 60 years on I’m rather repeating myself, this time in a much superior, funnier play. Ian McKellen Instagram - Frederic Aranda @fredericaranda is a London-based portrait photographer whose image of me went viral in 2019. His work has been featured in books and exhibitions, most recently at the National Portrait Gallery for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. He's worked with the Royal Ballet, the Kabuki and puppet theatres in Japan, the RSC and the Passion Play in Oberammergau (on my recommendation). Recently he brought his camera backstage at "Mother Goose." We'll be posting some of the results in coming days. I'll let him take it from here, with a fascinating look behind the scenes of a photographer's process: "I'm passionate about photographing people and have been doing it for 20 years. When I'm not shooting, I often dream about it at night — about how I would stage a group portrait for example, and what I'd capture of each person in it. I compose images in my head all the time. "I'm very interested in what happens behind the scenes, peeking through the curtain or through a half open dressing room door. I love capturing the warm ups, the rising tension and the transformations backstage. I'm curious about how it all works. I admire all the wonderful people you never see on the stage who make it all fit together and work so smoothly. My approach has been to capture without directing, staging or meddling. I wanted them to pretend I wasn't there. "Photographing Mother Goose backstage has been the most wonderful privilege. Not just because of the world class talent, but also because it's exactly the joyful balm that we all need right now. I laugh when I hear the jokes, no matter how many times I've heard them before. The songs are excellent too. "During Mother Goose I loved photographing Ian's transformation in his dressing room and also his quick changes in the wings. It takes 3 or 4 people to get him in and out of costume each time, but in record time. Note that he's tap dancing on stage and doing all sorts of physical feats, and then has to come and get changed each time. There are some amazing moments from the wings behind some of the gauze-screens which really summarise the half on and off-stage feel that I wanted to capture."

Ian McKellen Instagram - I’m celebrating my 80th birthday next year by touring a new solo show to UK theatres I know well and a few that I don’t. The show starts with Gandalf and will probably end with an invitation to act with me on stage. In-between there will be anecdotes and acting. I open at my local arts centre in January and end up by August in Orkney. Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions. Ian McKellen Instagram - As Hamlet says, “The play’s the thing”. Back to work after all these idle months, I am so grateful for a chance to meet an audience again, albeit distanced from each other. Our set allows some of them either side of the actors onstage, close to the action. I’ll resist the temptation to give them a hug of relief and joy.
Ian McKellen Instagram - Wimbledon has the Centre Court and also the Theatre, where I first appeared in the pre-West End run of "A Scent of Flowers." I shared a dressing room with the late Peter Howell. Ian McKellen Instagram - ALAN RICKMAN (1946-2016) There is so much that is matchless to remember about Alan Rickman. His career was at the highest level, as actor on stage and screen and as director ditto. His last bequest of his film "A Little Chaos" and his indelible performance as Louis 14th, should now reach the wider audience they deserve. Beyond a career which the world is indebted to, he was a constant agent for helping others. Whether to institutions like RADA or to individuals and certainly to me, his advice was always spot-on. He put liberal philanthropy at the heart of his life. He and Rima Horton (50 years together) were always top of my dream-list dinner guests. Alan would by turns be hilarious and indignant and gossipy and generous. All this delivered sotto, in that convoluted voice, as distinctive as Edith Evans, John Gielgud, Paul Scofield, Alec Guinness, Alastair Sim or Bowie, company beyond compare. When he played Rasputin, I was the Tzar Nicholas. Filming had started before I arrived in St Petersburg. Precisely as I walked into the hotel-room, the phone rang. Alan, to say welcome, hope the flight was tolerable and would I like to join him and Greta Scacchi and others in the restaurant in 30 minutes? Alan, the concerned leading man. On that film, he discovered that the local Russian crew was getting an even worse lunch than the rest of us. So he successfully protested. On my first day before the camera, he didn't like the patronising, bullying tone of a note which the director gave me. Alan, seeing I was a little crestfallen, delivered a quiet, concise resume of my career and loudly demanded that the director up his game. Behind his starry insouciance and careless elegance, behind that mournful face, which was just as beautiful when wracked with mirth, there was a super-active spirit, questing and achieving, a super-hero, unassuming but deadly effective. I so wish he'd played King Lear and a few other classical challenges but that's to be greedy. It turned out Millie Anna @outwith_millieanna is an aspiring model with the @zebedeetalent agency and outspoken about Down Syndrome. I had a cousin with the same condition. Now she has shown me around Windsor, under the loving guidance of her father Jeffrey, who snapped us on our way.

When I'm not shooting, I often dream about it at night — about how I would stage a group portrait for example, and what I'd capture of each person in it. I compose images in my head all the time. "I'm very interested in what happens behind the scenes, peeking through the curtain or through a half open dressing room door. I love capturing the warm ups, the rising tension and the transformations backstage. I'm curious about how it all works. I admire all the wonderful people you never see on the stage who make it all fit together and work so smoothly. My approach has been to capture without directing, staging or meddling. The songs are excellent too. "During Mother Goose I loved photographing Ian's transformation in his dressing room and also his quick changes in the wings. It takes 3 or 4 people to get him in and out of costume each time, but in record time. Note that he's tap dancing on stage and doing all sorts of physical feats, and then has to come and get changed each time. There are some amazing moments from the wings behind some of the gauze-screens which really summarise the half on and off-stage feel that I wanted to capture."

When he played Rasputin, I was the Tzar Nicholas. Filming had started before I arrived in St Petersburg. Precisely as I walked into the hotel-room, the phone rang. Alan, to say welcome, hope the flight was tolerable and would I like to join him and Greta Scacchi and others in the restaurant in 30 minutes? Alan, the concerned leading man. On that film, he discovered that the local Russian crew was getting an even worse lunch than the rest of us. So he successfully protested. On my first day before the camera, he didn't like the patronising, bullying tone of a note which the director gave me. Alan, seeing I was a little crestfallen, delivered a quiet, concise resume of my career and loudly demanded that the director up his game. Behind his starry insouciance and careless elegance, behind that mournful face, which was just as beautiful when wracked with mirth, there was a super-active spirit, questing and achieving, a super-hero, unassuming but deadly effective. I so wish he'd played King Lear and a few other classical challenges but that's to be greedy. On that film, he discovered that the local Russian crew was getting an even worse lunch than the rest of us. So he successfully protested. On my first day before the camera, he didn’t like the patronising, bullying tone of a note which the director gave me. Alan, seeing I was a little crestfallen, delivered a quiet, concise resume of my career and loudly demanded that the director up his game. Behind his starry insouciance and careless elegance, behind that mournful face, which was just as beautiful when wracked with mirth, there was a super-active spirit, questing and achieving, a super-hero, unassuming but deadly effective. I so wish he’d played King Lear and a few other classical challenges but that’s to be greedy.
