We laughed a little bit, too. Check it out at the link in my bio. Fourteen years ago today, I signed the Affordable Care Act into law. Afterwards, one Republican member of the House called the ACA the “most dangerous piece of legislation ever passed in Congress.” Another predicted the country would “never recover from it.” But then something else happened: it actually worked. Since the ACA was passed, the percentage of uninsured Americans has been cut in half. And thanks to the investments the Biden-Harris Administration has made to build on the ACA, more than 21 million Americans now have access to quality, affordable health care. Today, young people are staying on their parents’ plans until they’re 26. Americans with pre-existing conditions are no longer being denied coverage. Seniors and people with disabilities are paying less for prescription drugs. And Americans everywhere are switching jobs and starting their own businesses without worrying about losing their insurance. In so many ways, the Affordable Care Act has become part of our lives, changing the way we think about health insurance. But that doesn’t mean we can take it for granted. Right now, some Republicans are still trying to repeal and gut the ACA — including calling for cuts that could put insurance out of reach for tens of millions of Americans. We’ve come too far to let that happen. President Biden has proven that he’ll keep fighting to build on the ACA, and we need to fight with him. Because health care is not, and never will be, a privilege. It’s a right — and there’s so much more we can do to make it more affordable and effective for everyone. This is who we need leading the country for the next four years. Congrats to @POTUS on a powerful State of the Union address last night. Jerron Hawkins and Noah McQueen grew up in DC and were two of our @MBK_Alliance mentees during my time at the White House. Since then, both have graduated from college and pursued careers that allow them to give back to their communities. It’s been great seeing their progress over the years. Check out their story: My picks are in! I sat down to talk about them with @CraigMalRob and @UKCoachCalipari on their podcast @WaysToWinPod from @HigherGroundMedia. Check out our conversation at the link in my bio or wherever you get your podcasts. And please don’t rub it in when my bracket gets busted. My picks are in! From record-breaking job growth to expanding health care coverage, @JoeBiden has spent each and every day working on behalf of the American people. I can’t say the same about the guy running against him. Happy Mother’s Day to @MichelleObama and all the moms out there! Michelle, thank you for all that you do for our girls. Today and every day, we celebrate you. And a big thank you to all the mothers and mother figures out there who provide us love, inspiration and support, often in the face of remarkable odds. Cinco de Mayo is an opportunity to recognize how deeply Mexican American culture is woven into the fabric of our country, and how much generations of Mexican Americans have influenced the way we live. To all those celebrating today, ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Happy 94th birthday, Dolores! When I was a young organizer, reading about @DoloresHuerta’s life and work showed me what was possible. As one of America’s great labor and civil rights icons, Dolores has devoted her entire life to advocating for marginalized communities. She knows the power of community organizing, and through the Dolores Huerta Foundation, she continues to train and mentor new activists and organizers. She also came up with a pretty good slogan, “Si, se puede.” Yes, we can. From our family to yours, we hope you have a wonderful and blessed Easter! In your early 20s? You might not know that the Affordable Care Act is the reason you can stay on your parents’ health care plan until you’re 26. Before the ACA, health care companies could kick you off earlier – sometimes right after college. It’s another reason why we need to keep building on the ACA – not repeal it. Because health care isn’t a privilege. It’s a right. In Chicago last week, I had a chance to see a prototype of the Power of Words exhibit at the Obama Presidential Center. The final version will be 88 feet and show how the words we use can transform the lives of the people around us. Check it out: I’m glad @DemRedistrict is still hard at work making our democracy more representative. This year, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee is investing in several state-level elections and backing candidates who are key to stopping anti-democratic agendas—including gerrymandering. I hope you’ll join me in supporting them. When Jahkil Jackson was just eight-years-old, he founded Project I Am, an organization to provide support and awareness for the homeless in his community. Now Jahkil’s a junior in high school and credits the support of the @MBK_Alliance for allowing him to build on his work over the years. Hear his story: It’s always great checking in on the progress at the Obama Presidential Center. Yesterday, I had a chance to see a preview of the ‘Power of Words’ exhibit. When it opens, Michelle and I hope the Center will be a place where visitors from Chicago and beyond will come to reflect and be inspired to create the change they want to see in the world. Chicago, Illinois This Earth Day, let’s protect the only planet we’ve got by taking action in the fight against climate change. One way to do that is through @POTUS’s American Climate Corps, which will provide opportunities for thousands of young people to gain skills and find good-paying jobs tackling climate change in their communities. States across the country are launching their own programs for folks who are passionate about leaving the planet better than they found it. If that sounds like you or someone you know, check out ClimateCorps.gov to learn more and apply. Wisconsin made history this week! @govevers signed into law new, competitive state legislative maps that get rid of one of the most gerrymandered maps in the country. For the first time in over a decade, Wisconsin voters will have a real shot at electing leaders who are responsive to the will of the people. Competitive maps are good for our democracy and good for our elections — and this victory shows us what progress can look like. Today marks 10 years since we launched the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance. From the White House to the @ObamaFoundation, the @MBK_Alliance has worked to build supportive and safe communities for boys and young men of color and connect them with the mentors and opportunities they need to succeed. There are now more than 100 MBK communities across the country working hard every day to make change happen. I’m proud of everything they’ve accomplished, and can’t wait to see what they can do over the next decade.
