Cheick Kongo Instagram – Posted @withregram • @spencersolo Toshio Fujiwara is a very important character in the history of muay thai and kickboxing. With a record of 126-13-2 and 99 kos, he fought mainly during the 70s.
Fujiwara was trained by Kenji Kurosaki (who was trained by Mas Oyama) a man who combined karate, muay thai and boxing techniques to develop the Japanese style of full contact kickboxing meant to go against the pure thai style fighters of Thailand. Kenji also trained Jan Plas who is most notable for opening Mejiro Gym in the Netherlands (essentially giving birth to the Dutch style of kickboxing). (DM to get link going into more detail)
Toshio is a key component in this as he was one of the earliest “Japanese kickboxers” fighting Thais in muay thai. So how is he important to muay thai? He became the first non-thai champion of Rajadamnern stadium in 1978 leading the way for fighters like Nadaka Yoshinari who is making history as the first non-Thai to be a three division Raja champ.
This is a HL of a fight he had in 1977 against Wannarong Piramit | Posted on 28/Apr/2024 04:19:28
