Chris Burkard Instagram – Last week’s short mission from Landmannalaugar in Iceland’s Highlands to the south side of Mýrdalsjökull gave me a new perspective on that stretch of landscape I crossed in 2021 on a fatbike… this time moving more intentionally and slowly on skis. Even though the forecast showed clear skies at the beginning of the week, we encountered some pretty tricky weather – high winds and low visibility forcing us to rely more on GPS tracking and teamwork to move through some of the technical features that precede crossing the glacier. Dipping my toes into the challenge of traversing on skis has been teaching me a lot of new skills required to be safe in adverse conditions and I’m excited for bigger objectives on the horizon…
