Dulé Hill Instagram – A major component of #theexpresswaywithdulehill was about his tap dancing, and using that as a musical and artistic link with our subjects. An relatively unconventional method to connect with people, I was blown away at how the art of Tap made people sing dance laugh and join in. It’s undoubtedly contagious and worked as a bridge during production to ensure the subjects knew we (as filmmakers) were also there to give back and collaborate. That this documentary project was a shared experience from us and them, and I feel that comes across on screen.
Personally, my interest in making documentaries is to transport a viewer into the life of someone else, and show them how their human experience is. But all too often, docs just work as a looking glass and not a two way experience, but with @dulehill he was able to give back to our artists with a shared creative moment and it adds depth and character to the entire show. Imho
Shout out to @dannylee and @calico_inc and @pbs for experimenting like this, and showing the power of Tap. @tikioffline and @alexbohs made a killer cut down and mini doc about this history of Tap that can be found at the link in my story and on the @pbs app #tapdance #dulehill #powerofdance | Posted on 26/Apr/2024 23:38:58
