Geoff Lawton Instagram – The Jerash University Permaculture Project is making significant progress in Jordan. They are transforming this standard olive monoculture orchard into a food forest using various sustainable techniques such as support species and water harvesting swales. They have also established a crop-growing system in a polytunnel using smart chicken composting systems. The chickens produce eggs and brood chicks for meat and create all the compost fertilizer needed for the crop system. They use a tractor with a wood chipper and compost turner attachment to turn compost quickly and efficiently.
The project is funded by the Adaptation Fund, with implementing partner UN Habitat and executing entity the Permaculture Research Institute. It offers hands-on permaculture education to students and reaches out to local villages and refugee communities, bringing hope for a secure and sustainable future for all. Geoff has also adapted his online permaculture design course for 200 aid recipients.
