On the morning of September 11th, 2001, Sit Room staffers raced toward the White House, including senior duty officer Ed Padinske, despite warnings from fellow senior duty officer Rob Hargis who told him not to come to the White House, in case a hijacked plane was headed there. Three minutes after the White House got the evacuation order, “one of the Secret Service officers came around, hit the phone — and said, ‘We’re evacuating. You guys need to go.’ And we said, ‘Okay,’ and went back to work, Hargis recalls.
