Joe Lycett Instagram – If you didn’t see this Sunday I won a BAFTA. There were two nominations, one for Best Comedy Entertainment Show and then one for Entertainment Performance. The only one I thought we had a shot at was the first, so I scribbled a speech thanking the brilliant team at LNL, then we lost it to some dickheads called Rob and Romesh.
In a clear administrative error I then won best Entertainment Performance. Those I thanked in my speech were indeed integral to my ‘performance’ – you can’t perform well unless you’re well supported – but there are a few others I missed.
A key one is @edstambo. When I realised a little too late into my TV career that I was shit at autocue, he gave me a masterclass in it. We did hours of playing, trying to read off a screen in different ways, with silly voices and strange emphasis, trying it quiet, then loud, then mixing it all up. Those sessions and our work beyond have been immeasurably transformative.
I also owe a huge debt to fellow nominees @antanddec. A few years back they very generously agreed to meet, taking time out of production for Saturday Night Takeaway to speak to an idiot from Birmingham. Similarly @chrisevanstfi was kind enough to have a long and meandering chat giving me tons of ideas and wisdom. I use the advice all three of them gave me – how to use an earpiece, read autocue, work with a studio audience, create controlled anarchy – in every single show.
I perform way better when I look good and @krishanparmar_ and @nicolefairfield take this to extraordinary heights each week.
I am also massively supported by my real mum and dad (@momalycett, not Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII), Denise, Beth, Fitz, @lucyekane, @sawyerchris, @latenightaunties, @jennybeavandesigns, @caitlinalberybeavan, @sweetbabygriff, everyone at the @gleeclubbham and @alwaysbecomedy.
There are a million other people who help me every day, the writers, production team, floor managers, camera team, sound, lighting, art department, and our gorgeous trainees. I’m surrounded by amazing eggs. I am a spoilt little brat. And now I’ve got a BAFTA.
