The half a billion dollar heist that robbed Black people of the most expensive land in America – it’s time to expose this carefully calculated scheme.
Seneca Village
Before Central Park was created, the landscape along what is now the Park’s perimeter from West 82nd to West 89th Street was the site of Seneca Village, a community of predominantly African-Americans, many of whom owned property. Founded in 1825, Seneca Village was the first community of free African Americans in New York City, many of whom owned property. In the 1840s, White upper class New Yorkers began calling for the construction of a large park in Manhattan, using the media to deride Seneca Village and other working-class communities in the area. Despite protests and legal resistance by residents, all inhabitants were evicted by 1857 and their properties destroyed for the construction of Central Park, with no compensation given to these residents, or their descendents, for land that is now worth over $500 million.
