Nikolay Serga Instagram – Photographed for @washingtonpost: More than two years into Russia’s war on Ukraine, the conflict persists. Amidst this turmoil, a remarkable unit known as the Cultural Forces @culturalforces.military has emerged within Ukraine. Comprising professional musicians turned soldiers, led by Mykolai Sierga @thekolya, their mission is to bring a semblance of normalcy to the front lines through music.
Inspired by Ukraine’s legacy of musical resistance, they perform a diverse repertoire from folk tunes to Metallica, aiming to uplift spirits and foster solidarity. Embarking on a 40-day tour of the United States last week, they express Ukrainian gratitude for U.S. military support, performing for veterans and audiences at the Ukraine House in Washington, D.C.
Among these musicians is Yurii Ivaskevych, 51, known by his military call sign, Pavarotti, a tribute to his former life as an opera singer in eastern Ukraine. Despite losing a leg in combat, Ivaskevych finds solace in music, using his voice to uplift fellow soldiers and express Ukrainian identity. Taras Stoliar, 47, plays the bandura, an instrument with deep roots in Ukrainian history, despite its suppression by Russian rulers. His journey with the bandura reflects Ukraine’s struggle for cultural identity, from Soviet rule to independence.
However, for some members like Olha Rukavishnikova, 25, music is not just a departure from the battlefield but a continuation of defiance. Initially pursuing a career as a violinist and conductor, Rukavishnikova joined a surveillance unit when the invasion began, risking her life on dangerous missions near Russian troops. Now, recovering from shrapnel wounds, she plays the violin with a black skull-and-crossbones patch on her left eye.
Tears well in Sierga’s eyes as he concludes a concert at the Ukraine House, acknowledging the uncertainty faced by the musicians. “War is taking our humanity,” Sierga says. “Culture helps take it back.”
