Lost a true Canadian Legend today. Incredibly grateful that I got to see this man on stage, to shake his hand, and to witness his poise, charisma and charm at work. All class, and made it look easy and fun. Rest In Peace Mr. Plummer, way to wear that Order of Canada pin to the Oscars ❤️🍁🏆
Driving down to ABQ from Santa Fe for the last day of vocal recording, I had this idea that Billy’s mother Patricia, played by the brilliant Deirdre O’Connell, might be dating some rich old music guy in Aspen. I asked her if she would be interested in providing the opening voicemail, setting up the concept of how this record might have come to be, and she responded immediately “Oh honey I am in in IN!” She improv-ed a bit of magic dust that makes the whole thing come together and fills me with joy and nostalgia. To finish it off, my old friend Stuart Pearce added the perfect album art design, working off a photo I think Josh took of me in Billy’s truck. I love that truck. Billy’s musical taste is as eclectic as it is unimpeachable, songs arriving within him like weather systems coming across the mountain plains, springing up like Old Faithful and descending like a meteor shower out of that big Wyoming sky. I like to think of his mind like a cosmic radio, coming in and out of static, some great DJ in the clouds dropping the needle on just the right track for the moment. I loved the songs that Brian Watkins and Zev Borow chose for season 1, and I wish I could’ve done them all, as well as all of the songs that feature in season 2. Maybe there will be a Volume 2 someday. For now, I hope you enjoy Billy Tillerson’s first and (quite possibly) only record, “T is for Tillerson”. 2/2
Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you, especially this one ❤️

Outer Range season 2 is comin…
The city of Toronto needs to stop these unconscionable encampment evictions. Our elected officials need to show up for people in this city who don’t have anywhere to go and stop finding stupid excuses to vilify them and the community working to help them. The small structures aren’t the problem. They’re the best solution available for a lot of people. Let the mayor and your city councillors know this won’t stand, and follow @esn.to.4real to get a better picture of what’s going on.
Super stoked to be part of a killer lineup at @winnipegfolkfestival this summer, especially to reunite with the band and see our pal @wyattclouis Hope to see you there!
While we were in New Mexico shooting season 2 of Outer Range, I had a little time on my hands and wanted to continue to explore Billy’s musical world. At the end of season 1 we had planned to do a one night only Billy Tillerson concert; Billy in all his Wyoming cowboy splendour singing all the songs from the show with a full backing band, Bobby the taxidermy bear onstage to oversee. Ultimately, that couldn’t happen because of COVID protocols, and I guess that left me with this feeling of unfinished business. So I called up my friend Ken Riley who has a beautiful place in Albuquerque called Rio Grande Studios where I’d done some recording during season 1. Working with Kenny is super fun; he was so game for this project, bringing so many great musical ideas and shepherding the sessions like the seasoned bad-ass pro that he is. In no time, he put together a small band of his favourite local guys; Brian Burton on drums, Colin Deuble on bass and Dave Devlin on pedal steel and dobro. I’m always amazed by a musician’s ability to immediately step into a tune and create such beautiful spaces within it, and I was so excited with what these guys were able to add to the loose song sketches I was working with. I passed those recordings on to my old friend Adrian Cook to thicken the sauce and add some magic on the keys and he did just that. I’m not sure if it’s me or Billy playing the piano, guitar, Wurlitzer and harmonica, but in those sessions there wasn’t much difference between us. 1/2
