Rob Greenfield Instagram – This is where I have been for the last week and where I will be for now.
I am here to complete my Food Freedom book. It has been a long journey and I thought I would have completed this many times already. This is the time!
I’m in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California staying on the edge of an off the grid property surrounded by hundreds of acres of forest! The property is owned by a couple who found my first book in a used book store about 7 years ago and has followed me since.
This platform serves as my desk to write with a healing view of the forest.
There is a solar panel and battery on site to charge my laptop.
There is a spring with fresh drinking water, and a bathtub to fill up and take my cold dips.
I am sleeping in my tent under the trees.
I have my wild rice, dehydrated mushrooms, greens, herbs and other dry and canned food from my last year of foraging. I’m cooking over wood from the forest with my small wood stove. I am foraging the spring greens that I can find and enjoying some herbs from the garden on site.
Wifi is a 5 to 10 minute walk away at Martha and Dan’s.
My basic needs are met.
It is quite alive here with birds and insects. A small songbird landed on my head twice while I was sitting at this table writing. Hummingbirds land daily just feet from me on a branch, interacting with me. A large male turkey very clearly told me that this is his domain, not mine. The frogs have kept me company with their evening croaking and have laid eggs in my bath as well!
Some days it is a bit chilly to be writing outside but I am grateful for all the Earth provides. I have hundreds of friends here amongst the plants and animals.
This has been a nourishing and peaceful place to be after my month in Los Angeles. I have spent multiple days in silence and solitude and have had many long nights in bed, catching up on rest.
