Sanjay Gupta Instagram – As part of our documentary film, “The Last Alzheimers Patient,” we investigated a strange Alzheimer’s-like disease on the island of Guam. People there were 50 to 100 times more likely to develop the disease than anywhere else on the planet. Nearly 25% of the residents there develop the disease, and for decades ethnobotanists have been trying to understand why. When people moved to Guam, their risk increased sharply. And, importantly: if they left, their risk decreased. For the first time, we present what they uncovered and the very real implications for all of us, wherever we live in the world. It has to do with Guam, flying fox bats and a simple amino acid known as L-Serine.
