Those who have seen Oppenheimer, this is where Kurchatov, the “Soviet Oppenheimer” created their nuclear weapons in complete secrecy.
Throughout the entire Cold War and even way after the fall of the Soviet Union this site was completely erased from all maps. No one knew it existed and even the locals of the area didn’t understand what the giant mushrooms that turned the clouds black really were for a long time. Information was very limited.
My friend @jwang815 went there a few months ago (an acount you should definitely follow if you like unique travel content) and I couldn’t stop thinking about it since then. No one had ever properly documented this place on YouTube however, until now. In our journey we got to speak to first-hand witnesses of the events who had never shared their stories before.
