Vir Das Instagram – Long cliched post alert. It’s my late doggy Watsons birthday. He passed during the pandemic. Get a pet. It’s a tough contract to sign with the universe. But it’s worth it. You’re signing up to be there for an ENTIRE life. From training them to walk, to their first everything, to their angry years, to their calming down, to their eating, to their losing their faculties, to caring for them as they pass. Think about that. You’ll never be in charge of a whole life journey. I remember this tiny puppy taking first nap on my chest, no bigger than a papaya, and how our breath just synced up, to sitting in a bathroom drenched in sweat with him with two steamers pointed at us because it was hard for him to breathe as an old man. The day you get them, you make a commitment to the universe saying you will watch them pass. When we lost him, I was locked down in a quarantine in another country and could not make it back to him. It was against the law. I had seen him four days before. But I wasn’t there when we went, and not a day goes by where I don’t agonise that he might have looked for me in his last moments. I live with that. It’s a tough contract. But you signed it. When I pass, I know he’ll be the first face I see, and I will apologise. Like I do when I pray for him. That’s life. Life moves.
Two wonderful indies have adopted us since. I always say find yourself someone who looks at you the way your pet looks at you. But then you’d have to be 16 bloody feet tall. Which is kind of what you are to them. No matter how tired you are, you’ll dance around the room, make silly noises, sing songs, run around like a fool…for them. If we did that with each other maybe this whole place would be a little better. If you can go through life remembering someone is waiting for you with love you deserve, that you’re never too silly for them, that your accomplishments or failures mean nothing to them, all they care about is your heart. To someone, you’re 16 feet tall.
Get a pet. Even better, adopt one. Sign the contract. It hurts, but man it’s worth it. | Posted on 23/May/2024 08:06:42
