Some people feel strongly that all colonialist legacies should be eradicated. Is it possible to achieve such a goal? Well, when such views are expressed using imperial languages (spoken by over 90% of the world’s population), the answer is clearly – no. The idea that you can go back in time and erase all traces of colonialism is simply unrealistic. But just because we received certain legacies from our ancestors, that doesn’t mean we have to behave like them! From a recent conversation with @adamgrant for the ReThinking podcast. People are free to believe in gods if they find it helpful, but there is no need for gods in order to live a good life. Morality doesn’t mean “obeying gods”. Morality means “liberating yourself and others from suffering”. #morality #gods #atheism #religion #quote
“Various groups distort and weaponize the term ‘Zionism,’ depicting it as a malignant form of tribalism or even racism,” @yuval_noah_harari writes in @PostOpinions. “We cannot do justice here to the many strains that existed within Zionism over the past 150 years, and to the impact that events such as the Holocaust and the various Arab-Israeli wars had on Zionism. What is clear is that over the generations many Zionists did deny the right to Palestinian nationhood, and laid claim to the entire land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, as well as to additional territories east of the Jordan, in the Sinai Peninsula and elsewhere. But other Zionists held much more sensible views, and were willing to settle for far less. David Ben-Gurion and the majority of Zionists embraced in 1947 the U.N. partition plan that mandated the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside a Jewish state. It was Palestinian rejection of this plan that led to the eruption of the first Arab-Israeli War (1948-1949).” Harari warns: “If Netanyahu’s bigoted vision vanquishes Herzl’s Zionist ethos, it would alter the meaning not only of the modern state of Israel, but also of thousands of years of prior Jewish history.” 🔗Visit the link in the bio of @PostOpinions to read more.

Luxuries tend to become necessities and to spawn new obligations. Once people get used to a certain luxury, they take it for granted. Then they begin to count on it. Finally they reach a point where they can’t live without it. Over the last few decades, we have invented countless time-saving devices that are supposed to make life more relaxed—washing machines, vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, telephones, mobile phones, computers, email. We thought we were saving time; instead we revved up the treadmill of life to ten times its former speed and made our days more anxious and agitated. #luxury #timesaving #anxiety #quote #sapiens
What’s the meaning of life? Philosophy, religion and science are all running out of time to address this question. As artificial intelligence and biotechnology give humans the power to reshape and re-engineer life, somebody will soon have to decide how to use this power – based on some story about the meaning of life. Philosophers are very patient people, but engineers are far less patient, and investors are the least patient of all. If you don’t know what to do with the power to engineer life, the invisible hand of the market will soon force upon you its own blind reply. Unless we’re happy to entrust the future of life to the mercy of quarterly revenue reports, we need a clear idea what life is all about. #AI #Science #Philosophy #Future #Quotes #21Lessons
The world is full of difficult problems, and it’s not possible to hide this from kids. But having an open conversation with children about global challenges doesn’t have to be scary. We can highlight to them what we should also remind ourselves: that people made this world what it is, and people have the power to change it. It’s a bad time to be a dictator. The rise of AI poses threats and opportunities for various people, but one thing’s for sure: it can’t be intimidated or terrorized. Watch Yuval’s full conversation with author and @gzeromedia founder @ianbremmer, via the link in bio. #AI #dictators #totalitarianism
What happened to conservatives? They used to be all about conserving. They used to protect institutions and traditions – but nowadays, in many countries, they’re attempting to overthrow and destroy them instead. At the start of this century, something amazing happened: governments worldwide started spending more on healthcare than on the military. This was unthinkable for most of history, but humans proved that it’s achievable. Unfortunately, the current resurgence of war has led global defense budgets to jump to a record high. Nevertheless, the unprecedented achievements of the recent past remind us that the decline of war is not some divine miracle: it’s a reality we can collectively choose. Which are you, predator or prey? When you see life as a struggle between these two groups, there’s very little hope for improvement in the world. But if you accept that human beings always have a choice, and that war is not historically predetermined, the possibility for peace emerges. At least until AI takes over! How do we get the climate crisis to compete with a viral TikTok? Humans haven’t evolved to notice long-term impacts on their environment. This is why we’re so bad at it.
