When I was invited by @themuseumofmodernart - to write a poem about a piece of art in their collection - I immediately began searching for the Boricua Artists. 😂🇵🇷 @papo.colo knew I wanted to write a poem in conversation with and about who we are, who we have always been. A people having to navigate through migration, belonging, assimilation, erasure and so much more just to survive! I am writing poems about my history inside of a country whose various states are banning books. I am writing poems inside of a country where censorship exists only for those who challenge the status quo. I will always remember where I am from. Part of that remembering for me means finding the Boricuas who created art about the human condition before me, it means honoring them by finding their work and never letting us be erased. It means bringing my people with me whenever I go. Because of lack of access, I came into Puerto Rican literature late in life. & there are still so many stories yet to be written. I believe Puerto Rican Literature is a living breathing thing. We are here, creating and being in conversation with each other, across living rooms, across generations, across waters, across timelines. We will always remember each other. Because we must.
