BTS time! @shogunfx
1. Working with Lash and his team on our first naginata scene in the woods which you’ll see in Ep 3. Crazy rain and mud on the day😀
2. Heather-san and Ai-san putting up with my nonsense for 40 mins every morning as they dressed me in Carlos’ beautiful kimonos. I can’t wait for you to see the story they tell👘
3. To make Sanna’s life a little easier, I crocheted a pin holder to hold the hundreds of pins that were used to hold Mariko’s wig in place. Always your Monchhichi🙈
4. Getting up at 4am and starting my day in Rebecca’s chair. Our second time working together and she knew everything I needed, from skincare, to makeup, to the best shots of espresso on days that were extra tough🥹

One of the first questions Anna Sawai had for showrunner Justin Marks when they met to discuss #Shogun was, “Why are you remaking this?”
“I didn’t want it to be another depiction of Japanese women being sexualized by white men,” says Sawai. “I wanted this to be the right portrayal of women.”
But early conversations with Marks dispelled that worry, as he and the show’s writers also were intent on being mindful of problematic conventions of the genre.
“Justin said everything that I needed to hear,” says Sawai, adding in Japanese that it put her at ease.
