Who authorized Rio Tinto to deal with the politics of the Serbian state at the level of the European Union, is it paid for, and if so, who pays for it? I would like to add – how is this possible and why is it done?
Last week, professor Ratko Ristić informed the public that Rio Tinto has something that no other lobbying organization has in the EU: a registered interest in Serbian accession to the European Union. Even more interestingly, Rio Tinto is the only one out of 12,900 registered companies and organizations that has the stated interest of “Serbia’s accession to the EU”.
In response to the questions above, the legal representative of Rio Sava, Mrs. Babić,
attacked Professor Ristic for mentioning politics, but failed to address the problematic politics of her company. She negated politics, separated political issues from economic ones in order to avoid responsibility.
By denying justified concerns about this problem, especially about the interference of a private company in our politics, Babić normalizes the role of corporations in maintaining the existing colonialist structures and continuing the privatization of our country.
With her appearance on the national frequency, Babić shows us that she is drawn into the politics of the neoliberal corporatocracy, and that she is exactly what she accused Professor Ristić of: a deeply political creature, ready to repeat the rhetoric needed to normalize the corporate occupation of our country and agricultural land, to it justifies the destruction of our clean water, air, forests and other living things, and to sacrifice all that is sacred for the profit of a foreign company. He is truly an amazing politician.
