It has been getting great response since its release and has just made the short list for the Documentary Short Subject category for the upcoming Oscars @theacademy. The filmmakers, @bgproudfoot and @krisbowersmusic, interview music students of the Los Angeles Unified School District (@laschools) who speak to the impact that music and learning to play an instrument has had on their young lives. The personal stories of the skilled craftspeople who work in the LAUSD instrument repair shop are interesting and so moving. A deep dive “behind the music” and into those that devote themselves to repairing and maintaining instruments to be used over and over again by learners from elementary school age through high school. The film is a testament to the diversity of Los Angeles and the power of music education in the lives of young people who invest themselves in opportunities offered to them, free of charge, and open up a whole new world of music to explore.
