Carla Esparza Instagram – 2 of the most common mistakes I see with the single
1.) Having a gap between body and the single leg. This will often cause the head to pop off as you spin to finish the single leg dump. (One exception to this variation is if you have the single leg straightened/extended with the lace, an ideal variation for people with long limbs).
2.) Not keeping the center leg planted as you spin. This can cause you and your opponent to continue to spin together.
Common mistakes not demonstrated:
A.) Not keeping the head up and attached to the body. This can give the opponent an opportunity to push the head down and defend the single, “where the head goes the body must follow.” Also, keeping the head down and/or to the outside leaves you open to guillotines.
B.) Step deeply (past the leg you are shooting on) to create that initial bump to off balance opponent. This initial bump is crucial to off balance, and then taking opponent the opposite way with the single leg dump finish. (Variation is the snatch single leg, which requires a big initial step back).
