When we aim for 8 to 30 reps per set during our workouts, we’re hitting a range that’s good for making muscles bigger. Here’s why it works:
Let’s say you’re doing an exercise like squats. If you’re doing sets of 8 reps, you’re likely using a heavier weight. This challenges your muscles in a way that promotes muscle growth. But if you’re doing sets of 20 reps, you’ll probably use a lighter weight. This still challenges your muscles, but in a different way, focusing more on endurance and pumping up the muscles.
So, by mixing up the number of reps we do, we’re hitting different aspects of muscle growth. When we lift heavier weights for fewer reps, it’s like telling our muscles to get stronger and bigger. But when we lift lighter weights for more reps, it’s like telling our muscles to keep going and not get tired easily.
This range also keeps us safe. Lifting super heavy weights can strain our muscles and joints, increasing the risk of injury. But by sticking to weights that allow us to do 8 to 30 reps, we’re less likely to overdo it and hurt ourselves.
Plus, spending more time under tension, especially with lighter weights and more reps, can still lead to muscle growth. It’s like keeping our muscles busy for longer periods, which they respond to by getting stronger and bigger over time.
So, aiming for 8 to 30 reps per set gives us a good balance. We’re challenging our muscles enough to grow and get stronger, but not so much that we’re risking injury. It’s a smart way to approach muscle-building workouts for many people.
